Resting for the Night

Scott's procedure went as planned. Fluid was successfully removed from his lungs this afternoon. The procedure may need repeating tomorrow. Scott is still sedated so he can rest through the night.

Wendy told me today that the trauma doctor said the staff were surprised that Scott was even breathing when he was brought in.

More Work to be Done Today

Scott had some trouble when his feeding tube was removed earlier today and is now sedated. There is a procedure scheduled for 2:00. I believe it's to clear his lungs of any fluid, though I'm not sure. He reportedly has a fever as well. I am only relaying this information so that those of you checking in can be in thought and prayer for him for whatever he needs today.

Keep those messages going on the guest book. I'm sure Scott will be very happy to read through them when he is able. It's great to know that Scott has been in good spirits, joking with his family and the hospital staff. That's part of why I am personally so confident that he will come through this as strong as anyone can.

Guest Book Added

I just added a guest book to this blog. It's on the right just below Scott's photo. Please feel free to link to it and add any messages you have for Scott. I'll get them to him when he's able to read them. Ignore my name. It's not my guest book, but Scott's--and Wendy's and the kids' for that matter. I'm sure they'd be glad to hear from all of you, so please add a note when you can. Thanks!

More Damage than Originally Thought

I spoke with Scott's Dad this morning. He said the surgery last night took a lot longer than it was supposed to because the surgeon found more torn ligaments in Scott's neck than was expected. They were told this is usually fatal. Thank God Scott was resilient enough to survive the accident at all. Scott will be recovering in ICU for a couple of days and then will be moved to another room for a day or two before they can transport him.

Long Night for Scott & Family

I received a voice mail at 2:00am from Danny. He was on his way home from the hospital in Bakersfield area. He said Scott got out of surgery around 12:30. The surgery went as planned, though he mentioned there was more to do than first expected. I'll follow up later this morning to see how he's recovering.

In Surgery

Scott went into surgery about half an hour ago. I spoke to his brother Danny, who sounded very positive. He said the procedure takes two to three hours. I'll post when I hear back from him tonight, unless I fall asleep in my chair. So if you check back later and nothing is posted, it's because I fell asleep.

Still in a Holding Pattern

I just spoke to Danny, Scott's brother. Scott was just returned to his room from an MRI. The results were good enough for them to proceed with the surgery. It's supposed to happen sometime this afternoon for sure. Danny said the surgeon has performed over 500 of this surgery type before.

Surgery Rescheduled

The surgery is set for 1:00 today.

Some Accident Details and Surgery Information

My wife and I delivered about a month worth of dinners for Wendy and the kids to Wendy's parents last night. Wendy was at the hospital with Scott. Christian and Caiden were playing with their month-old puppy lab Sawyer and looking froward to a sleep over at their grand parent's. They are very nice boys.

I was told that Scott is scheduled for surgery early this morning, however Wendy's parents told me that they thought it may not happen because the doctors want an MRI first. I'll be in touch with Danny later this morning to find out. A group of us from work are planning to visit Scott tomorrow if he's able to receive visitors.

Many of you have asked what happened. What I've heard from at least two people on each point is that Scott and a friend were in an off-road vehicle similar to a Rhino. They were not off-road but on their way to or coming back from four wheeling. They hit a deep hole that they couldn't see and the vehicle flipped. Scott and his friend were both thrown from the vehicle. Scott was harnessed in and had a helmet on, but his seat ejected. Scott's friend reportedly suffered several broken bones and ribs and a punctured a lung.

First Things

Scott was in an off-road accident this weekend that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Early reports are that he will not walk again. He also has a broken collar bone. He is in a hospital near Bakersfield at the moment, but is likely to be moved to a facility nearer his home sometime this week. He's in a body cast up to his chest.

He was scheduled for surgery to fuse the discs in his back so that he could be transported, but that surgery was postponed until tomorrow morning.

Scott is married to Wendy and has grade two school-aged sons, Christian and Caiden.

There are some immediate needs that you all can help with. My wife is going to make about a month worth of dinners for Wendy and the kids at Dream Dinners tonight. The cost will be about $240 total. If you'd like to contribute $5-10, please send a check to:

My wife is a CPA and will be maintaining a full accounting of any receipts and expenditures. I am researching the possibility of creating a charitable organization so that future financial assistance to the Ortiz family would be tax-deductible to the donors. I would like to have at least one poker tournament to benefit them. I will also look into organizing a golf outing/benefit. If anyone is familiar with how best to do these things, please contact me at paulpalomino@cox.net.

I will report on this blog when I have updates that the family gives me permission to share. I will try to keep this blog updated until Scott is well enough to take it over himself if he wants to. Please check back regularly. Thank you.
