Update on Scott 10/17/07
Hello Everyone! Just wanted to send a little update on Scott. I feel as though every time I send something it is for something going wrong, bad news that needs prayer, so today is different. My update is all good news! Starting last week, Scott has been doing so good. His kidney doctor prescribed a low dose high blood pressure medicine that he takes at night, and his blood pressure since has seemed to be under control. Also, last Tuesday he went to physical therapy and kicked some serious butt! His therapist couldn't believe all he was doing, as a matter of fact she hadn't seen him for 2 weeks (because he had been so sick) and she thought he had been somewhere else, with another therapist! We also had a couple meals out, which are challenging because Scott has a hard time with holding silver wear and getting his chair under tables, etc. He worries that people are staring. But we have had good practice and great success each time, and it really builds his confidence, and mine. I actually get really nervous on these outings, too. We went to the dentist, which we were both a little nervous about that, could they accomodate us in the wheel chair, the x-rays, etc. but it all went well. So, I just thought you would all like to know that your prayers are being answered as are mine. I know a lot of you pray for my peace as well as Scott's health, and it really has gotten us both through each day. Thanks so much for your love and support, and please continue to cheer Scott on!!!Love,Wendy

Scott is Home!
Hey Everyone! Scott is home! Yippie. They wanted to watch one more day for a fever, so they finally let him go today at 5:30. His blood pressure was still low, but they pumped him with fluids and told me as long as his fever did not exceed 100 he was good to go. He ended up having a Urinary Tract Infection, Pnemonia (which I guess he still has for up to 2 months?), and a bowel infection that more than likely he got in the hospital. They sent us home with an antibiotic and instructions that he take it easy until his next chest x-ray in a month. Also, he has to religiously, for the rest of his life, breath into this inhaler thing to prevent pnemonia. So all of you that see him must help me nag him on this, because I think we are in for a lot more of these infections followed by pnemonia if we are not on top of this breathing thing. Thanks for all of your loving prayers and thoughts. I appreciate it more than you will all ever know.Love,Wendy

Update on Scott's Hospitalization!
Hi Everyone, I don't know too much right now....they finally put Scott in a room at 10 PM and got him on his "special" mattress and everything situated for him. They still are not sure what kind of infection he has...the biggest thing is when they did his blood cultures this morning it showed very high white blood count which also is septic???? I don't know what this all means, but for sure there is an infection in his body somewhere. At this point we are hoping it is a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) because this is very common in quadrapalegics and can be treated easily. At this time though, they are not sure. It could also be his wound (which I don't think it is because I treat it and see it 2x a day and it has only looked better) or lungs, they did a chest x-ray, so we will see. They also have him on isolation as a precaution which also means the boys cannot visit. They don't even know he is in the hospital yet, so I am so bummed that they can't go see him. It does look like he will be there for at least 3-5 days. Please continue to pray, I have a feeling we are in for a lot more infections in the years to come, this first one is scary, though!!! I just want Scott to feel good for more than one day!!!! By the way, he is already teasing the nurses, so at least his sense of humor is in tact!!!! And he is making Steelers bets with the guys at the hospital......football!!! Yikes.Thank you all so much for ALWAYS being here for me. I do appreciate it and love you so much!Love,Wendy

Thank you, from Wendy
Hello Everyone! I hope you all know by now that Scott has been home almost 2 weeks. It has been crazy, but somehow, by the grace of God, we are getting by day by day. Some of you may not know, but on the first day of rehab months ago the therapist asked Scott what his goal were...his first answer was to go to his sister's wedding. Well, he achieved his goal tonight. I didn't bore you guys with all of the pictures but I thought you would like to see a few of our family. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for getting me through the past 6 months. It was honestly the darkest time of my life but it definetely had a lot of light to it, too. To see the support, love and friendship that is in our lives is truly a gift that i can only thank God for. You have all done so much for me, and I will be forever grateful to each and every one of you. I know I can get through the rest of my life with all of you by my side. Thanks so much!!!Love,Wendy

Scott's Homecoming day!
Scott will not be home today like origially planned. But, he will be home next week for sure! Wendy is staying with him at the hospital so the two of them can establish a routine. Christian and Caiden will be home from their Pennsylvania vacation next Sat. Aug. 4th. It will be so awesome for them to come home to both Mommy and Daddy! They are looking forward to it!
At this point Wendy has a bed ready for Scott but she still needs a ramp built for Scott to enter the front door. I know she has had MANY offers and is now ready for action. Dale has already removed part of her porch posts to make the entry wide enough so it just needs a ramp from the walk up to the door. Please feel free to give her a call or an email ortizmom@pacbell.net or simply just go over and do it. She will be at the hospital consistantly for the next several days.
Please direct your prayers to Scott's homecoming. He CAN NOT wait much longer! That man wants to get home so badly!

Scott's Homecoming is Drawing Near!
Hi all! Wendy had a good "family meeting" with the powers that be at Kaiser. They agree that with progress going as well as it is, Scott will be home by the end of the month! The goal date is 7/27! I am sure that is not soon enough for Scott but, it will give him a bit more time to get comfortable with maneuvering himself and it gives Wendy the opportunity to make sure she has things good and ready for him at home.
Scott thanks you for all the emails! Keep them coming! Please understand that he is still working on his typing skills and won't be able to reply. But, keep sending the encouragement. He really enjoys it!
God Bless!

Rehab is going really well. Scott is learning how transfer from the bed into his wheelchair on his own and becoming stronger and stronger each day!
He was having some blood pressure issues but those have been resolved by correcting some of his medications.
Scott is also off all pain meds. That is huge because he now has a clearer mind to work on his recovery.
This all leads to Scott coming home. That goal is becoming more and more obtainable. And the sooner the better for Scott! He is really homesick and of course just wants to be at home with his family.
The fun news is that Scott is now online! He has his laptop and an internet card and is able to receive emails!! So please feel free to send him some love zitros@pacbell.net It will be great for Scott to hear from everyone first hand!!
Keep praying! Let's pray Scott home soon!
Blessings to you!

I need a favor!
I am asking this on my own without Wendy's knowledge (although she will read this soon enough)!
Wendy is taking a few days with the boys and going away with another family this coming weekend. This is a well due break from the past approx. 120 days she has spent at the hospital. Scott really wants her to go and enjoy herself. But, as you could imagine she is sick at the thought of not being with him for even a few days.
This is where my favor comes in... I know that Wendy would be more relaxed and have more fun with Christian and Caiden if she new that Scott had some company. I know there are those of you who do visit regularly and some who really want to. PLEASE GO! I know that there is a fear of not knowing what to say or being too emotional. Some of you are just afraid to see him in person. I can honestly tell you that there is nothing to be nervous about. You can't say the wrong thing. Just regular conversation works! He looks fantastic. Since the last photos, he has had his hair shaved back to his normal "do" and is growing a goatee so he looks just as you remember him. The trach hole is closed and there are no tubes or machines. He would love to see you!
Now, having said all that. It could get crazy with all of you rushing in there at once. So, if you will be able to go this weekend; Fri. Sat. or Sunday. It might be a good idea to call Wendy and let her know when you plan to be there so she can kind of get a little visitors schedule going. If you need her number you can email me triciabeaman@aol.com I'm afraid if I post it on the web she might just be a tad upset.
I knew I could count on you! I'm glad to know that my bestfriend can enjoy herself for a few days!
Blessings!

Back in Rehab!!
Scott is back in rehab as of last Friday night!
He had a great day yesterday! He was back into a wheelchair a couple of times and he is getting stronger and stronger!
This is the road that will lead him home! Let's keep praying that he continues to progress and that this stay in rehab will be much more pleasant and productive than his first experience.
God Bless!

Paul Talks to Scott - He Sounds Like Scott Again!
Hey All,
I just got off the phone with Scott. Several others at Scott's office got to talk to him too. It's amazing how good he sounds--just like the old Scott! He's positive and upbeat. He's in a regular hospital room right now getting ready to go back into rehab, hopefully on Monday. He told me he can't wait to get out of there and play some poker!
He's also going to be getting a laptop with a wireless card soon, so hopefully he will be able to start emailing and maybe even updating this site himself! He said he can write but it "looks like a third-grader".
I'm going to hopefully get some time to visit him Sunday or Tuesday. I'll let you know how it goes.

Meeting went well!
Happy Tuesday!
Yesterday's meeting went very well. Kaiser admitted to "dropping the ball" as far as Scott's care is concerned. Wendy stood her ground and they have agreed that when Scott is ready to get back into rehab he will only have the utmost care by the superior doctors. Kaiser has said and done everything they should to appease the situation. And I know Wendy will make sure they follow through!
As you can see, Scott is looking GREAT! His boys are sure happy to see him! Blessings!

Trach is out!!
When Wendy walked into Scott's room last night to her surprise greeted by Scott who had a bandage where his tracheotomy used to be!! I don't know if she was expecting that at this time but, it was a huge delight to their day! May the Blessings keep rolling in!!!
Wendy has a big meeting with some of the staff involved in the Rehab situation and their higher ups, 10 in all. This will take place on Monday. Wendy will need all of our prayer and strength as she goes into this meeting. Hopefully they will accomplish something great!

News from Wendy
Hey everyone!
The last few updates have been posted frequently so if you haven't checked in the past 24 hours scroll down and read from about 3 below and up!
This is the latest from Wendy!
Hi Everyone, Just a quick update. Scott was moved to a medical room yesterday. Although this is so disappointing that he is out of rehab, the care he was receiving there was horrible. I don't know what will happen from here, but I have to believe in my heart with all of your prayers and with God by my side, that this is what is meant to be. I will be fighting for what is best for him in the coming days, so please pray for me to be strong and level-headed. I love you all and appreciate everything!Wendy

Happy 10th Anniverary Scott and Wendy!
Today is Scott and Wendy's 10th Wedding Anniversary! I know many of you remember that day as well as I do! What a party!! They were so young and Scott had a lot more hair! It's so hard to think that they are spending this huge milestone in the hospital today. And while it's terribly sad to celebrate this way I know they are very HAPPY that they have each other to celebrate with.
I am including an email from our friend Pam who was with Wendy at the hospital yesterday. I hope this sheds light on some of what has been going on down at Kaiser in Fontana!
I don't know how to adequately describe the progress Scott has made in the last 2 months. But, if I had to choose one word, it would be"UNBELIEVABLE". Scott was moved today from the Rehabilitation area of the hospital to a standard room. The reason for the move was to provide better care for Scott. Apparently, the Rehab nurses were not properly caring for Scott's bed sore, or for his trach, or other issues. Wendy also spoke to the wound specialists who promised to take the necessary actions to help the wound to heal, and then will work with Scott on some plastic surgery. Wendy will know more over the next few days as to what steps will be taken next. But, as I sat in the room and listened to the hospital employees admit that the care was not up to par, I felt so sorry for Scott. What was amazing tome was that Scott was not feeling sorry for himself. What a great, positive attitude he has. During my entire visit, Scott had a smile on his face.Scott has good use of his arms and hands. Of course, he will still needmore therapy to develop more strength. He fed himself the chocolate covered apples I brought. He held the phone to talk to his kids. Talk to his kids- yes, he spoke on the phone. I was shocked. There is no problem with hisvoice, and I learned that Scott is quite a smart ass. He likes to joke and mess with the nurses.Anyway, a lot more that I could say, but I think that people just have to go see it for themselves...what amazing progress Scott has made. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Pam Reinoehl

Kaiser Rehab SUCKS!!
I have a note from Wendy...
Hello All of my beautiful friends, I am writing you now because I am in need of some serious prayer. You have all been so supportive of me and I love you all and appreciate all of you prayer, love and support you have given me the last 4 months. This week I have had some really big problems with Kaiser. They are threatening to send Scott to a Skilled Nursing Facility and releasing him from the acute rehab program. This would be a huge set back to Scott's recovery and for those who are not updated by me daily, Kaiser is hugely responsible for these set-backs. They are basically dropping the ball and just giving up on him. PLEASE pray for me to have the strength to stand up to this organization and to get Scott what he is entitled to. I know you guys can help me with this. I am so strong with all of you behind me and I love you all so much!!! Love,Wendy Oritz
I did just receive a call saying they moved Scott out of rehab and into a medical room. Let's pray this is a good move!
Thank you!

Scott's Breathing is Improved
I'm sorry to leave you all hanging for so long since that last update. The episode of labored breathing turned out to be a bit of anxiety. Scott was okay once Wendy got to the hospital and the staff gave Scott something to help relax him. The level of nursing care is a little different in rehab that what Scott was used to. While the staff are excellent, they allow him to be a bit more independent than he is comfortable with. Candy spoke with the staff and they worked out a plan that hopefully that will be better for Scott.
I don't have any news on the infection. I am hopeful that I will have an update on that soon.
Thanks and keep praying!

Some ups and downs this weekend
Friday night I spoke with Scott and Wendy in rehab, they were having a fun night. Eating Arby's and laughing together. Scott had taken his first shower and had been outside in a wheelchair for the first time in 3 months. Dressed in his Steelers t-shirt & athletic shorts. They had super great day!
By Monday, things were slightly on a down slide. Remember that bed sore that was an issue a while back? Well, it is still being dealt with. It seemed as if it was slowly getting better although it was quite infected (E. Coli) and had for sometime caused Scott to be in isolation. With the move to rehab I thought they had gotten over that hurdle. Not so! The infection may have gotten into his bone and this will make for many complications. I won't get into all of that until Wendy knows for sure.
There is an IMMEDIATE PRAYER NEED regarding these matters. Scott hasn't felt so great yesterday or today and Wendy is on her way back to the hospital tonight to make sure he is okay and comfortable for the night. Scott is having some stomach pain and labored breathing. He's come so far from the ventilator that of course this is a concern. Please just stop everything and PRAY! I will update you as soon as there is some change or confirmation on the situation.

Scott has moved to a Rehab facility!
Scott was moved yesterday from the hospital into the rehab building at Kaiser. This is a very exciting move. This is a new beginning with a lot of work ahead. But, we all know Scott can do it!
Wendy feels that the staff is good here. She feels very comfortable with them. They keep him very busy. They are working with him daily until 1:30 pm. Scott was sitting up for 9 mins. today.
Scott is back on solid food. No more puree'!!!
Visitors are still very welcome between the hours of 4:00 - 8:00 pm and on weekends.

Scott's New Trach!
Scott received a new trach yesterday. This is a talking trach, so Scott is able to speak all the time now. This is music to everyone's ears. Wendy is so happy to have conversations and hear his voice. Scott has a phone in his room he can use. If you'd like to talk to him just let Wendy know and she will make sure he calls you. Visitor's are still very welcome. Scott is BORED!! He has his very own version of Grey's Anatomy going on there. He has learned all the in's and out's of the hospital staff... I think he needs some company; don't you?
Scott's feeding tube has been removed. He is eating so well. Scott's still on a "soft" diet but that isn't stopping him. There isn't anything you can't throw in a blender.
Also, Wendy prints off the guest book notes and reads them to Scott regularly. He loves to hear them, so if you want to send a hello that way he will definitely get it soon!
Things are really looking up! The Prayers are being answered...keep them going!

I Just Talked to Scott on the Phone!
My cell phone rang just now. Wendy was on the phone. She said, "I have someone who wants to talk to you." Then Scott got on the phone and said, "Hey Paul." I was blown away. I told him he sounded great. He asked if I was at work. I said I was and that there were several guys that happened to be right near me; I named them off. He said, "Tell them to get back to work." After the laughter died down we spoke a very little more and then he needed to rest. How awesome is that??

Scott's Diet Changes
Hi everyone! Scott's diet has changed a little bit. They have put him on only soft and pureed food for now. Please still feel free to bring him something if you'd like. He enjoys milkshakes, peach Juice-it-Ups, pudding or applesauce--things like that. Having the chance to "break bread" with his friends will encourage him to eat more than he might by himself. Thank you so much!

Scott is eating food and sitting up some!
EATING!! Over the past few days Scott has been able to eat "real" food. He can't eat too much yet and his taste buds aren't working too well right now due to the trachea blocking the airway to his mouth. There for, nothing tastes good to him. Not even the In & Out burger Candy brought him (go figure!). He is enjoying pudding with whipped cream and part of a Juice it up that Wendy brought in. Until Scott is able to eat up to 75% of the meals he is given he will have to stay on the feeding tube. Unfortunately, the feeding tube helps keep him full so he isn't hungry enough to eat what he needs to. It's a vicious cycle that he has to balance out. But, he's on the right track and Scott likes food so he will make it work. I know Scott has been dreaming about PIZZA and I hope he can enjoy a slice soon! For those of you who get to visit Scott, if you want to bring him a treat to eat it's okay as long as the nurses know what and how much he gets.
SITTING UP!! Scott has also been sitting up over the past few days. He has the assistance of a brace while he builds his strength up. He is able to stay up for 4 to 6 mins. so far. After spending the past 12 weeks lying flat it is difficult to sit up for too long. His blood pressure drops after a few minutes (this is a normal reaction for anyone in this situation) but like everything else, it is PROGRESS! Please continue to pray for the Ortiz Family. Thank you!

Bowling Fundraiser a Huge Success
I would like to thank all those who participated in the bowling fundraiser Saturday night. Thanks most of all to Carl Del Duca for organizing it. Thanks also to all those who contributed to Scott & Wendy, even if they didn't bowl. It was great to see Wendy and the boys, Candy, Jerry, Stacey, Danny and several other family members there. Scott Talking! More Time Off Respirator
What a nice day!
I heard Scott say today with his own voice "Thank you for coming". That was the biggest blessing. He told Wendy yesterday"I love you". What an amazing sound! I can't believe with the limited chatting time Scott had, he chose to talk to me.
Today marked Scott's 3rd day without a respirator. After a lung x-ray today they decided to put him back on the respirator for a bit. We are very positive that this will change for the better soon.
I was also lucky enough to see Scott go through his occupational therapy today. He is so much stronger than I thought possible. He was showing off like crazy!
I hope you enjoy the photo of Scott and Wendy. He truly is in his own heaven when with Wendy!

Scott With His Sons!
Hi everyone!
Scott wanted to share this photo of him and his boys. He so enjoys their visits and they love to see their daddy!
Scott's breathing is improving. He is going for several hours at a time unassisted and will hopefully be off the respirator completely soon! He's is very proud of these accomplishments!
Scott's fevers are also becoming fewer and farther between.
There are some new obstacles that Scott is dealing with such as bedsores. Unfortunately, those will be a long-term nuisance. Scott has a new very high tech (Which you know Scott loves high tech anything!) bed that moves his body to help alleviate the bedsore issue.
I am headed to CA today to see Wendy and Scott! I am excited to have a full report to post tomorrow evening!
God Bless!

Scott Continues to Improve. New Fundraiser this Weekend
I didn't get a chance to go see Scott this week, but I did see him on Easter. He looked even better to me. The swelling in his right arm and hand was completely gone. His new room is a bit larger than the one he had in ICU. He was in even better spirits.
Throughout the week I heard that several friends and co-workers visited Scott and that those visits were very positive. There are still struggles with getting Scott off the ventilator. Please continue to pray that he can be removed from this soon.
As a reminder, continue to check out the link on the right for upcoming fundraisers that you may want to support. I just posted a new one this morning. Thanks everyone!

Scott has New Scenery
Scott has been taken out of the Intensive Care Unit and put into the Intermediate Care Unit. This is a nice step forward on Scott's road to recovery. Scott is still battling that baffling fever. The doctor's are just stumped on what is causing it. They have him off of most of his antibiotics so that the infection will show itself and they can locate the problem.
Scott is in room 2118! Visitors are welcome. The sight of familiar loving faces really help lift Scott's spirits! It's a proven fact that the support of family and friends influences the patients recovery. Keep Praying!
God Bless!

Scott's Neck Brace is Off
Hello All,
I had a chance to see Scott again yesterday on Easter. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to add more info on my last visit with him Tuesday. Ironically my own father is currently hospitalized in the same building as Scott, four floors above. I was there yesterday to visit my dad and saw Scott too.
Last week after my visit on Tuesday, I called Wendy to let her know about my visit. She had arrived there shortly after I left. She told me that Scott's neck brace was removed soon after I left. She was so excited to be able to finally kiss him on the lips! She said that day was the first day in a long time that she felt truly optimistic.
When I saw him that morning, he was much more communicative than the week before. The swelling in his right hand had reduced significantly and he moved that arm around more. The dexterity in the fingers of his left hand is increasing as well. He was able to nod 'yes' as well as shake his head for 'no'. Scott directed my attention to the news to make sure I knew about the E.Coli scare in Lake Forest! I wasn't even paying attention; but he was.

Paul Visits Scott; New Fundraiser
I visited Scott early Tuesday morning. When I left, I felt very positive. I believe Scott wants and is trying hard to get better.
I couldn't tell whether Scott was asleep when I entered his room. His eyes were nearly shut. I quietly said, "Hi Scott". He immediately opened his eyes, looked right at me and raised his left hand to greet me. He seemed very happy to see me. I didn't get this message from his facial expressions. He's not really making any. He just looked me in the eye intently whenever I spoke. I told him that I and all his friends really miss him and are praying for him; that we want our Scott back.
Scott is not able to talk right now, I believe due to the tracheotomy. I figured out quickly that he would blink twice to say "yes" and shake his head to say "no". I realized that the TV was on and asked him if he was watching much of it. He shook his head. I then asked if it was bothering him. He quickly blinked twice and then again when I asked if I should turn it off. When I did so, I asked him if that was better and he blinked twice again. I talked to him about this and that, but not a lot. For a good portion of the time I just stood next to his bed and held his hand. He would drift off from time to time, but he would come right back if someone walked in the room, or if I said anything.
When I got ready to go, he lifted his right hand toward me to shake. This must be painful for him with the broken collar bone. He then squeezed my left hand a couple of times and moved it back and forth. It felt like he was saying, "Thanks for coming, it's so good to see you". During my time with him I told him that I knew that he was probably frustrated, sometimes lonely, and bored. I told him that he is strong;that I have every confidence in him to recover. I encouraged him to keep going, that all his friends and family are rooting for him.
Scott looked very good to me. His hair and beard are growing out. I plan to go see him again next week.

Still Resting
Scott is still doing about the same. He still is fighting the fever. It is consistent at @ 101*. The pneumonia is still there. And all we can do is wait and pray. Wendy asks for prayer for patience for herself. It is so hard being in limbo with little change for so long. Pray that every minute that goes by is a minute of HEALING to Scott's body and a minute of PEACE for Wendy and a minute of JOY for Christian and Caiden.

A Restful Day
I just thought you'd all like to know that Scott had a peaceful day yesterday. Wendy said he slept most of the day. I'm sure he was exhausted from the events of the day before. Rest is the best thing for his body, it allows him to heal. We can just keep praying for Scott, Wendy and the boys! I hope to have great news for you soon!

Scott is Stable!!
I just got off the phone with Wendy. Scott is stable and they are running tests. This is all the information she has at the moment and she will let us know anything more as soon as knows more.
Thank you for your endless prayers!

Immediate Prayer Request
Scott went into Respiratory Distress about an hour ago. His oxygen/blood ratio took a big dip. His heartbeat skyrocketed and his blood pressure first took a dive and then rose really high. They worked on him for 30 minutes before kicking Wendy out of the room to do a broncialscope (?). They just called her back a moment ago. She will call me as soon as she can to let me know how that all went. But, please pray now and pray hard!!

Some New Prayer Requests
Scott could use some big prayers for his spirit! He is very sad and down. As you can imagine it must be very depressing being confined to that room with such slow progress. It breaks Wendy's heart to see him this way. Scott is such a happy guy, it'd be nice for his family to see him smile. Wendy gets most of her emotional strength from her boys but, the brightest part of her day is to see a spark in Scott's eyes and it's just not there right now. Scott's spirits and fighting will are going to be a constant prayer for a long time.
Also, the biggest obstacle they are facing at the moment is Scott's fever. He has had a fever for the majority of the last 4 weeks. They can't seem to find the cause and can't stop it. The doctor's are taking him off some of his antibiotics to see if they are causing the fever. Please pray his fever goes away. So things can move forward.
Thank you!

Moving ahead slowly!
Scott is recovering slowly. The infectious disease specialist didn't find anything other than the pneumonia Scott has been fighting. That is good news. He seems more comfortable now and is resting well and looking good! It just takes time. The boys are visiting him again today! That is very HAPPY!

Christian & Caiden see their Daddy!!
Scott had a nice visit with his boys yesterday. It went really well and it was great for all of them to see each other. I am POSITIVE that this will bring great healing to both Scott and his sons. I know it was very comforting to Wendy that they were all together and could tell each other how much they love one another! That is all that really matters.
They brought in an Infectious Disease specialist to see Scott. They are trying to determine if and where he has an infection. The many rounds of antibiotics that they have given him are not doing the trick. His fever is still up and down and they need to get that under control.
I hope to know more soon! Today will be a GREAT day!

A Few Setbacks
Yesterday was a rough day for Scott. They put him back on the ventilator in the morning. Scott also went through a period of severe shaking and non responsiveness. He came out of that but, they don't know what caused it. The concern was stroke vs. seizure, but tests ruled out a stroke. The main focus was a reaction to meds. He has had so many and they are weening him off. By the end of the day Scott was doing much better.
Today WILL be better! I am SURE of it! I believe the ventilator will be gone again and Scott will be again telling Wendy and I to shut up when we are talking over him! I will let you know!!

Off the Ventilator
Scott's ventilator was removed today. Scott has been breathing on his own all day. They will leave the trach in for a while longer as is standard procedure in neck trauma. It is hopeful that this won't be permanent but, they can't say for sure. Scott has shown us a glimpse of himself making jokes and getting frustrated when we can't read his lips. Wendy is praying that Christian and Caiden can see Scott soon. It's been 18 days since they have seen their daddy and that is just too long! Keep praying that Scott's progress so this can happen soon!

In Fontana!
I was able to see Scott and spend several hours with Wendy and him in Fontana. Last night was a little rough. They did not give Scott any pain meds or sedatives during his transport so when he got to Kaiser he was really uncomfortable. Wendy, Amie and I were there for 5 hours, during all of which he was very agitated and not able to rest. As the night wore on they were able to increase his meds until he was less restless and more comfortable.
This morning was much better! Scott was so much more relaxed and comfortable. He has great nurses caring for him and Wendy feels very at peace with the care he is getting there.
Scott is so strong! He was trying his hardest to sit up and talk. The type of trach Scott has right now prohibits him from speaking. So, it was a struggle to get him to relax. For this reason, Wendy asks that those who are planning to come see him please wait a few more days. It's still a little too much stimulation for him right now.

Good News!! Scott is Being Moved to Fontana!

Scott Finally Had His Procedure
I spoke with Wendy this evening. Good News--Scott's bronchoscopy went well and the doctors were able to get a lot of fluid out of his lungs. He was at a very low oxygen level prior to the procedure, but is now at 97% oxygen. With the tube out of his throat, he'll be a lot more comfortable than before. He is less sedated and will hopefully start to really improve.
Scott is considered a respiratory case still. This means that when he is moved, possibly in the next week or two, he has to be moved to a bed in ICU. Unfortunately, there's a possibility that he will be moved to Baldwin Park. Wendy is obviously hoping a bed opens up for Scott closer to her, either in Riverside or Fontana.
Due to my schedule, I may not be able to post over the next two days--but I'll try. Thanks again for checking in. Continue to hope for better and better news!

Still Waiting on Tracheotomy; Scott's House
Still waiting for the tracheotomy. They told Wendy tomorrow. I know Wendy is frustrated as I think we all are. We all want to hear that there is grand progress and things are moving quickly.
I am positive that there will be something more to report soon!
I know that so many of you have offered to or know someone who can renovate Scott and Wendy's home to make it wheelchair accessible. Wendy is game for anything! She just wants Scott to be comfortable and capable in his own home. She would really love it if someone could come and look at the possibilities and draw up some plans and get the ball rolling.

Charitable Bank Account Set Up for Donations
Wendy's friend posted this information earlier, but the formatting somehow cut off the right side of her message, so I deleted it and am posting the same information I received from Martha Logue. Martha is a close friend of Wendy's also. She's been in contact with me over the last week regarding this account, which took a bit to set up.
If you would like to make a donation to the Ortiz Family, please send checks made payable to Gwynne Ortiz (Wendy's legal name) to:
The Ortiz Family
Charitable Donation
c/o Southland Credit Union
10701 Los Alamitos Blvd.
Los Alamitos, CA 90720
Checks can also be made out to The Ortiz Family, or Scott & Wendy Ortiz. Martha advised me that she has applied for TIN for this account that the IRS said would take 60 days to receive.
Also, my wife and I received many checks from the very first post I made on this blog. The first two contributions received accounted for 2/3 of the money needed for the food we purchased. We made up the difference for the other 1/3. We are going to sign over and forward all of the other checks we received to this account. Thanks to all of you who contributed. Scott's entire family have expressed to me how thankful they are to all of you for the support you've given so far.

Tracheotomy Postponed
I spoke to Candy just now. She said the tracheotomy was postponed until tomorrow.
It's good to see posts coming in from Wendy's good friend Tricia and Scott's sister Stacy. Thanks to all of you that plan to support them in the upcoming fund raisers. If you haven't been to this site in the past couple of days, page down to see more information on these.

Tracheostomy
As you know, Scott has been on a respirator since he came out of surgery on Tuesday. While I was there he was on a pretty heavy duty one, which they had to keep him heavily sedated and restrained. Then they stepped him down yesterday before we left, back to the regular respirator. They've been getting a lot of bacteria out of it, and decided to keep him on it. My mom, Candy spoke to Wendy a bit ago and they are waiting to do a tracheostomy. There's no word if he will be on it forever or for a few days but it's mainly because his oxygen levels dropped through the night. Hopefully this will able him to speak, as the last few days he became very frustrated with the respirator. But I'm not really sure how a trach tube works? Keep up the prayers for Scott and for Wendy to be strong while she is there.

Wendy Upate and Fundraiser
I spoke with Wendy this morning as she was on her way back in to see Scott. If all goes well, they are hopeful that they will be removing the breathing tube today. I am praying that once we get over that hurtle they will be able to give Wendy a better idea as to when they can transfer Scott closer to home. We don't want Scott moved before he is ready but, it would be such a blessing for the family to have him near. It is tearing Wendy up needing to be with both Scott and her boys. She has so much support and help with Christian and Caiden. They are all so well loved and cared for by everyone. But, she is really concerned for their emotional well being during all of this and it's difficult for her to leave them for days at a time. But needless to say, being by Scott's side is her main priority.
Wendy would like everyone to know that she is overwhelmed with all the love and support she is receiving from everyone. She is feeling your prayers and can't even begin to put in to words how much she appreciates it all! Thanks doesn't begin to express it.

No News Today; A Note from Wendy
Scott's cousin, Carrie Whitsell and I spoke this afternoon. She had been in touch with Wendy, who is with Scott in Bakersfield. Wendy wanted me to relate to everyone how wonderfully she feels the staff at Kern Medical Center have been to Scott. She feels his level of care there is excellent.
The hope is that tomorrow the respirator will be removed. If so, they will be able to perform a CAT scan to see if the damage repaired in Scott's neck is healing properly. If you read this tonight or tomorrow morning and are the praying kind, please pray that Scott's lungs will be cleared of any remaining fluid so this can take place. Thanks everyone.

Still on Respirator but Alert
I spoke with Candy again this evening. She said she and Stacy had a good visit with Scott today. He opened his eyes and knew they were there. At one point, Candy told Stacy they should go back to the hotel and they got up to go. Stacy looked back and Scott was making a face, so they stayed with him and held his hands. They tried to go a few more times, but he squeezed their hands and wouldn't let them. Finally they had to leave during the next shift change, when the visitors are required to leave the room.
Candy said they apparently do chest X-rays each morning to see how much fluid is still in his lungs. They apparently need his lungs clear before they can remove the respirator. The respirator has been in since the surgery the other night.
Scott is a very popular patient among the group of doctors that see him. One of them told Candy that there is something very special about Scott because the entire team is really pulling for him in a special way.
I will be away most of the day tomorrow and will try to post any new information I receive tomorrow night. Wendy and Candy and all the family know how much all of you are praying and thinking of them. Keep those messages coming.

Fever is Down
I just spoke with Stacy who is with Scott in Bakersfield. His temperature has lowered to 99 degrees for about half the day today. He is on a new respirator that seems to be more comfortable for him. He is still very sedated and resting.
A Note from Stacy; More Info fom Candy
Scott's sister Stacy was kind enough to further clarify my last entry. I wanted to post it here:
"Just to clear things up..the recent surgery was to repair the (vertebrae) in his neck. He won't be transported until he is stable with infection and capable of moving. He is still on a respirator and we're waiting on another (bronchial) treatment on his lungs for the bacteria/infection."
I've invited Stacy to author articles/posts of her own on this blog. I'm also inviting Tricia Beaman, a close friend of Wendy's, to post articles on Wendy's behalf. It's nice to see information coming straight from a family member.
I received a message from Candy last night. She said that Scott is still on a respirator (intubated) and has a fever of about 102 degrees. They are trying bring the fever down and find out what's causing it. A pulmonary specialist will try clearing his lungs again today. His blood pressure is good. He is sedated, but alert.

Clarification
I've been reading through the entries I've made this week and just want to be clear that the family was told that Scott is permanently paralyzed. No operation can be done that would allow him to walk again. The recent surgery was not to repair his spine, but to enable him to be transported. As far as I understand it, he is still in very serious condition. The immediate concerns would be the risk of pneumonia or infection, etc.
Thanks to those of you who've added notes in the guest book on the right. It's awesome to see how many great friends and family he has that are continually praying for and thinking of him.

Scott's Mom, Candy
Scott's mother, Candy Zwart called me this morning. We had a great time talking about Scott. She related several stories to me of their time this past week. She is very positive and upbeat. She knows her son will come through this, as she likes to say, 'in typical Scott fashion'.
One of the stories she told me is already familiar to you if you've read this blog. After the trauma team left Scott, they reported to the lead doctor that would handle his case. They reported to him Scott's name, what happened to him, the type of injuries he suffered, etc. What he told Candy later was that as the trauma team were recounting all of this information, he kept waiting to hear what the time of death was. At one point, he interrupted them to ask, 'You mean he's breathing?' He'd apparently survived where others wouldn't.
While I was talking with her, my daughter needed some tissue, so I told her where to get it. When Candy heard this, she told me that Scott would've loved to have a daughter. On Super Bowl Sunday, a close friend from Scott's childhood was there, Crystal Johnson. She was pregnant with a girl. Scott told her that he liked the name Hayden Elizabeth. Well, Hayden Elizabeth was born yesterday at 5:30.
She said that Scott is supposed to be in physical therapy 36 hours after surgery. That should be today. She expects that Scott will be in this hospital through to the middle of next week and will hopefully be moved to Anaheim Hills. He is at Kern Medical Center on Flower Street in Bakersfield.

Resting for the Night
Scott's procedure went as planned. Fluid was successfully removed from his lungs this afternoon. The procedure may need repeating tomorrow. Scott is still sedated so he can rest through the night.
Wendy told me today that the trauma doctor said the staff were surprised that Scott was even breathing when he was brought in.

More Work to be Done Today
Scott had some trouble when his feeding tube was removed earlier today and is now sedated. There is a procedure scheduled for 2:00. I believe it's to clear his lungs of any fluid, though I'm not sure. He reportedly has a fever as well. I am only relaying this information so that those of you checking in can be in thought and prayer for him for whatever he needs today.
Keep those messages going on the guest book. I'm sure Scott will be very happy to read through them when he is able. It's great to know that Scott has been in good spirits, joking with his family and the hospital staff. That's part of why I am personally so confident that he will come through this as strong as anyone can.

Guest Book Added
I just added a guest book to this blog. It's on the right just below Scott's photo. Please feel free to link to it and add any messages you have for Scott. I'll get them to him when he's able to read them. Ignore my name. It's not my guest book, but Scott's--and Wendy's and the kids' for that matter. I'm sure they'd be glad to hear from all of you, so please add a note when you can. Thanks!
More Damage than Originally Thought
I spoke with Scott's Dad this morning. He said the surgery last night took a lot longer than it was supposed to because the surgeon found more torn ligaments in Scott's neck than was expected. They were told this is usually fatal. Thank God Scott was resilient enough to survive the accident at all. Scott will be recovering in ICU for a couple of days and then will be moved to another room for a day or two before they can transport him.
Long Night for Scott & Family
I received a voice mail at 2:00am from Danny. He was on his way home from the hospital in Bakersfield area. He said Scott got out of surgery around 12:30. The surgery went as planned, though he mentioned there was more to do than first expected. I'll follow up later this morning to see how he's recovering.

In Surgery
Scott went into surgery about half an hour ago. I spoke to his brother Danny, who sounded very positive. He said the procedure takes two to three hours. I'll post when I hear back from him tonight, unless I fall asleep in my chair. So if you check back later and nothing is posted, it's because I fell asleep.
Still in a Holding Pattern
I just spoke to Danny, Scott's brother. Scott was just returned to his room from an MRI. The results were good enough for them to proceed with the surgery. It's supposed to happen sometime this afternoon for sure. Danny said the surgeon has performed over 500 of this surgery type before.
Some Accident Details and Surgery Information
My wife and I delivered about a month worth of dinners for Wendy and the kids to Wendy's parents last night. Wendy was at the hospital with Scott. Christian and Caiden were playing with their month-old puppy lab Sawyer and looking froward to a sleep over at their grand parent's. They are very nice boys.
I was told that Scott is scheduled for surgery early this morning, however Wendy's parents told me that they thought it may not happen because the doctors want an MRI first. I'll be in touch with Danny later this morning to find out. A group of us from work are planning to visit Scott tomorrow if he's able to receive visitors.
Many of you have asked what happened. What I've heard from at least two people on each point is that Scott and a friend were in an off-road vehicle similar to a Rhino. They were not off-road but on their way to or coming back from four wheeling. They hit a deep hole that they couldn't see and the vehicle flipped. Scott and his friend were both thrown from the vehicle. Scott was harnessed in and had a helmet on, but his seat ejected. Scott's friend reportedly suffered several broken bones and ribs and a punctured a lung.

First Things
Scott was in an off-road accident this weekend that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Early reports are that he will not walk again. He also has a broken collar bone. He is in a hospital near Bakersfield at the moment, but is likely to be moved to a facility nearer his home sometime this week. He's in a body cast up to his chest.
He was scheduled for surgery to fuse the discs in his back so that he could be transported, but that surgery was postponed until tomorrow morning.
Scott is married to Wendy and has grade two school-aged sons, Christian and Caiden.
There are some immediate needs that you all can help with. My wife is going to make about a month worth of dinners for Wendy and the kids at Dream Dinners tonight. The cost will be about $240 total. If you'd like to contribute $5-10, please send a check to:
Paul Palomino

My wife is a CPA and will be maintaining a full accounting of any receipts and expenditures. I am researching the possibility of creating a charitable organization so that future financial assistance to the Ortiz family would be tax-deductible to the donors. I would like to have at least one poker tournament to benefit them. I will also look into organizing a golf outing/benefit. If anyone is familiar with how best to do these things, please contact me at paulpalomino@cox.net.
I will report on this blog when I have updates that the family gives me permission to share. I will try to keep this blog updated until Scott is well enough to take it over himself if he wants to. Please check back regularly. Thank you.
